Tomorrow is Marathon Day!!!! Holy SHIT!
So in twelve hours I’ll be leaving the house for the marathon start. I can hardly believe I’m running this thing. I went and picked up my race packet today over in West Berlin and got to see the size and scope of this event. It’s mammoth. Anyone who has been to Wildflower Triathlon might think that that is a huge event with lots of coordination. The Berlin Marathon is 10 times bigger, with over 60K athletes and over a million fans. There is a full expo to go along with the marathon that takes us 5 or 6 halls of the Berlin Convention Center. I wandered around like an idiot looking at all kinds of racing gear and shoes and power goos from the future. I also got flyers for marathons in China, Florence, India; basically all over the world. I’ve decided to run them all before I come home.
I also learned a trick from some Aussie marathon runners who were on my tour yesterday. They told me to print my name and country on my shirt, so that when I come running down the street all the fans can hoot and holler for me and make me superhuman. I guess this is what everybody does these days, so I went and got a shirt made with the US flag and J DUB across the front. They said you will need the extra inspiration at the end. We’ll see. My biggest fear is that I will not finish and have to report that sad news back here. My second biggest fear is that my brain will cease connecting with the right synapses, which sometimes happens to people running in endurance events, and I will have a massive seizure and shit myself right at the finish line in front of the world press. I saw video of it happening to a guy in an Ironman and I can’t think of anything worse. I even searched google for ways to prevent this, seriously. I am also going to be very nerdy and wear my fuel-belt on this run. I probably don’t need it because they have aid stations, but I trained with it, and don’t want to change from my training on race day. I think other people will have them too.
So yeah, little nervous, very excited, and will fill erebody in tomorrow afterwards. Peter and Andre and Cornelia are going to post along the road and get boozed on champagne so there should be some pics.
